Once upon a time, the Cult were a goth band.

And that's not one of my Looney Tunes assessments, either. They were an early, proto-goth band, a little akin to Bauhaus and they were called Death Cult.
To your left is their first eponymous EP in its entirety.

00:00: "Brothers Grimm" sounds the most like something Bauhaus would do.
03:30: "Ghost Dance" has a section that reminds me a little bit of "25 or 6 to 4".
07:30: "Horse Nation" hints strongly to what the band would eventually become.
10:54: "Christians" features a drum intro right out of the Joy Division playbook while the guitar played over it sounds strangely nicked from Cheap Trick's surrender.

None of these are bad things.
