Cannibal Sativa Recording Group Temporary Shut Down

Not economy related.

So, my DVD+-RW drive just took a colossal dive into a malfunction pool.
It is a TSST TS-L632H. If anybody knows a solution, please tell me in the comments section. Otherwise, all orders posted from today until the problem is solved will be honored but only in MP3 format, as I'm unable to burn CDs at this time.

Model TSST DVD+-RW L632H
Will not read disks, will not write disks. Properties claims is that the device is working properly, despite the fact that it does not recognize that there is a disk in the drive. All drivers are up-to-date, have uninstalled and reinstalled the device, performed a Microsoft "Fix It", and when the three or four different tech geek forums insisted that iTunes fucks these drives in a particular way, I uninstalled iTunes.

This fucking thing still doesn't work.

Sorry, that's a TSST DVD+-RW TS-L632H.

Since Dell has been a big bundle of help since my warranty expired (they want to charge me fifty bucks to tell me it's broken and call it a diagnostic), I called Samsung, who actually manufactures the drive.

The TS series is strictly a "manufacturers' line", meaning that these things go directly to the computer manufacturers and that the warranty is handled through them.
BUT...
You know I don't give a shit about that and figure, "Um, you built the part, so you're going to tell me how to fix the fucker." Of course, what I think and what I say are ultimately different things. So what I actually say is, "OK, so then what's you're consumer grade version of this?"
Turns out that they manufacture the exact same damned thing for your average consumer under the model name SN-S082H; this knowledge has expanded the search even further.

For clarification's sake, that's: SN-S082H as in SN-S(Zero Eight Two)H.

do you have antivirus installed? did you uninstall any programs either through the control panel or just delete any folders prior to this happening? do you know if your windows "auto" updates? were any new updates installed prior to the shit hitting the fan?

You may want to run a full virus scan just to cover that base. I have a dvd/cd rom combo drive that one day did the same thing. I stopped using it for awhile and one day it just started working again. I know you dont have the time for that but don't discard it just in case.

Also, do you know if your cd/dvd program updated recently, perhaps on its own? There can be a number of programs that will install files that your rom will try to use to operate. What software are you using to burn discs? Have you tried installing a few different programs to see if that works? Imgburn is a good, small, simple program you could download and test with. It is free.

I've only begun my research into this specific model but I wanted to make sure you are taking EVERYTHING into consideration regarding your error. It can be a real bitch trying to trace your steps back to what caused the error. Anywho, thats it for now. I will report later with my findings.

also, what operating system are you using?

Nope, no anti-virus, that shit costs money. (Yeah, yeah, lecture me when I can afford it and don't buy it.) Deleted no programs and but there was an auto-update the night before. (My computer is scheduled to update Wednesdays at 0300.)
Essentially, I watched a DVD that morning and it worked fine. Later, tried to burn an audio disc using Roxio. Roxio fucked up the disc, so I gave iTunes a try and that didn't even try to work. Something about initialization failing. It was at that point that I tried playing a few commercially released CDs and none of them read.
From everything I gather on this model they're prone to crapping out after about two years. Or as one tech-forumite wrote (and I swear the guy was completely serious), "When they get extremely old." Either way, mine is about that age.

you are leaving out critical information. what message did roxio specifically give you? is it possible to try burning another disc to get the error?

I did a little reading last night and read the same stuff about it dying. Two years is pretty ancient in the technology world.

You didn't say what operating system you are using. I have seen some links to the official Vista site where they address the problem you are having. I'm sure if you are using XP that their website has something regarding the matter as well.

What you really need(ed) to do was write down the error message you got from roxio and research that. I'm not sure how much time you want to spend looking into your drive, but I would spend a few days before considering buying a new one. If you DO end up doing that, pricewatch.com is a good place to start.

Sorry I can't be of more help right now. Michelle's mom is coming to Buffalo this weekend so we've been REALLY busy lately trying to get shit done. Plus, we're going to be running the Buffalo Marathon on Sunday. LOL. I am not sure how much more I can contribute before you give up.

That's because neither the computer nor the program gave me an error message. According to the computer, this device is working properly. According to reality, this device is not working.
I'm using Vista. I've been to a few of the Vista sites and tried their solutions to no avail. A lot of the problems detailed were slightly different (like the presence of an error message). I'd be interested in seeing your findings, though.
